When we lead from the heart, we earn influence with others through relationship rather than authority. Relational leaders realize that title and position only get you so far, but the places you can take a team with relational influence are endless.

There are many challenges that growing organizations face. But even in the happy land of having all the money and staff you could want, one persistent leadership challenge often remains: the ability to fully trust your team.

How do you lead or influence your co-workers when you lack direct authority over them?

Many times when working with leaders they say something along these lines —  "if I could just find people who are as committed as I am, I would be able to…" This statement is at the heart of this article and should lead you to the real question that needs to be explored as a leader is, commitment to what?

If you embrace these two truths, it will transform how you lead and manage.

Splinters in our team cultures are detrimental to the health of our team. While they seem small, their impact is large. We typically try to ignore or look past them, subconsciously hoping they go away, but you can never really ignore the pain they create.

When it comes to abilities, one of the greatest a believer can possess is “approachability.”

I probably don't have to tell you this, but the reality of most work environments is that expressions of appreciation and recognition are often few and far between. When I'm involved in management training, I try to impress upon managers the need for employee recognition and the great benefits it can reap.

When I’m finally willing to acknowledge my pride and look at this from a different perspective, I realize that I can be far more intentional in using outside voices to my advantage.

One characteristic that is often missing from leadership lists is thankfulness. An attitude of thankfulness not only benefits you but also your team members.

This type of leadership, leading alongside, views people not just as staff or employees, but as individuals God has given us care over. We see ourselves as entrusted with a precious task to lead them and lead them well.
