This time of year we see consumerism on full display, as people (including us) spend exorbitant amounts of money for things that are on sale but probably don’t need. It’s too tempting to buy to fulfill a want or a desire, rather than a need.

I believe the Bible calls us to be consumers!

Now, before you stop reading, move on, and label me a heretic… Let me explain what I mean. There is a positive type of consumer.

Ephesians 5 talks about not being drunk with wine but being filled with the Holy Spirit. How do you get drunk? By consuming a large amount of alcohol. How are you filled with the Holy Spirit? By consuming a large amount of the Holy Spirit.

It’s not bad to be a consumer. We consume things every day, like food, energy, gasoline, coffee, and many other things. Being a consumer is not bad.

What matters is the object of our consumption.

Honestly, we could all use a little bit more Jesus in our lives. My hope and prayer for you is that this holiday season you’ll become more and more of a consumer, not of goods, but of God.

My prayer is that you would consume more and more of the word of God, that you would write it on your heart that you might not sin against him.

My prayer is that you would become more and more a consumer of the example of Jesus Christ, and that you would be known for your love for the Lord and for your neighbor.

My prayer for you is that you would become a consumer Christian. A consumer of Jesus Christ—that as you consume more and more of Him you would become more and more like Him, resembling more and more of His character and His nature and His likeness.

Here’s to consuming more this holiday season. More and more and more of Jesus Christ.
