Starting out in life, I dreamed about writing books like Lord of the Rings. Finally, in my late 30s, I signed a nonfiction commercial publishing contract (for Career Crossover and Leading from the Lions’ Den).

Starting out in business, I dreamed about becoming a manager, then owning my own business. In my late 20s, I helped launch a startup called Networld Media Group.

After I became a Christian in my 20s, I dreamed about going into ministry. By the age of 50, I had gradually moved into lay leadership in my church.

My dream of marriage and children played out in surprising, beautiful ways.

Now, at 55, I have new dreams. My first grandchild will be born soon—I want to help him grow in the Lord. I want to keep encouraging leaders in the marketplace and the church to deepen their walk with Christ. Writing projects still excite me.

What’s my main lesson after all this dream-chasing? First, I know I need to more proactively seek God’s will for my future. Second, I’ve realized I simply need to give him glory and thank him for what he’s already done.

Bottom line, my dreams shouldn’t be about me, but about him.
